This sounds like it'll work:

Start with a rectangular polygon with numerous vertical subdivisions.
Keep that object, but twist that same object into a circle ala the
 Saturn tute in the 3.5 LW manual.
Apply a fire texture to the first object, and then morph with surfaces
 to the second object.

Might work.
